Privacy Policy

STEPFILE.com (stepfile.com) lets you view and share CAD models right in your browser. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what we will and will not do with it. We have kept it plain and free of legal fog.

The short version: we collect the minimum we need to run the service, we don’t sell your data, we don’t mine it, and we don’t look inside your files. There are only a few narrow exceptions, listed below, and they exist to keep the service safe and to help you when you ask us to.

What we collect

Account information. If you create an account, we store your email address and a securely hashed password. That’s it. We don’t require your name, company, or phone number.

Files you upload. When you open a model, it’s processed in your browser. When you save a model to your account or create a share link, the file is stored on our server so you, or the people you share it with, can open it later.

Access logs. We maintain access logs for security, internal auditing and planning purposes.

Basic technical information. To keep the service working and to prevent abuse, we log limited technical data around uploads, shares, and other service activity: things like the address a request came from, the country when it’s available, the file type and size, and a fingerprint of the file. We also keep records of service activity, such as when models are opened or downloaded, so we can understand how the service is used, plan for growth, and spot abuse or misuse. We use this to keep the service healthy, not to build a profile of you.

Usage counts. We keep anonymous, aggregate tallies of activity, such as how many models have been viewed or shared in total. These are just numbers and aren’t tied to your identity.

What we do not do

  • We don’t sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone.
  • We don’t show you ads or hand your data to advertisers.
  • We don’t open, inspect, or view the contents of your files as a matter of course. Your models are yours.

The only times we would look at a file

We treat your files as private. There are three narrow situations where we might need to access one:

  1. A valid takedown or legal request. If someone reports that a file infringes their rights or is being used to cause harm, we may need to review it to respond properly.
  2. Verification or safety. If our automated safety checks flag something, for example a file that looks like malware rather than a CAD model, we may need to confirm what it is to protect other users.
  3. When you ask us for help. If you contact support and ask us to help with a specific model or your account, we may look at what’s needed to assist you, and only that.

Outside of these, we leave your files alone.

How long we keep things

  • Shared links expire automatically after their set lifetime, and the file is deleted after that, plus a short grace window so you can restore it by signing up.
  • Saved projects stay in your account until you delete them or close your account.
  • Technical and activity records are kept only as long as they’re useful for security and service planning, then discarded.
  • If you delete your account, we remove your saved files from our servers.

Your choices

You can view, rename, and delete your saved models at any time from your account, and you can delete your account, which removes your stored files. If you’re in a region with data protection laws, such as the EU’s GDPR or California’s CCPA, you have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal data we hold about you. Contact us and we’ll take care of it. We keep what we collect small to begin with, so there usually isn’t much to ask about.

Cookies and analytics

We use the cookies needed to keep you signed in and to make the site work. We also use Google Analytics to understand, in aggregate, how the service is used; it sets its own cookies for that purpose. We don’t use advertising cookies, and we don’t hand your data to advertisers.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. Material changes will be noted on the site.

Children

This service isn’t directed at children under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.
