STL is a mesh of triangles with no units, no color, and no metadata, which is exactly why it pays to look before you slice. Rotate the part and check the geometry from every angle. Measure the features that matter, in inches or millimeters, and keep several measurements on screen at once to sanity-check scale, because a model exported in the wrong units is the classic STL surprise. Cut a section through it to look inside. If it came out of a 3D scanner, you’ll see every lump the scan picked up.
Share it before you commit material
Save the model to a free account and you can pin notes right on the geometry (“this wall looks thin”, “boss needs to be 10mm”), attach reference photos or the source drawing, and send one link. Whoever you send it to opens the marked-up model free in their browser and answers you on the part itself instead of in a screenshot thread. When you allow it, they can download the STL too.
Free, with no catch
This viewer is built and owned by Texas Metal Works, a fabrication shop that made it for its own crew and shared it with the world. Free as in beer: paid plans exist only so the service pays its own way. The whole story is here.
