Connecting an AI Assistant

An AI assistant can work with your models: list and organize them, upload files, read measurements and draw pictures. You decide what it may do.

Adding the Connector

Open Account, Connected Apps. It shows the connector address with a Copy button. In your AI app, add a custom connector with that address and sign in when asked. Step by step for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok and Copilot is on Connect Your AI to StepFile.com.

The Allow Page

The page asks "Connect <app> to your account?". Reading is always included. It covers your plan and storage, folders, models, versions, attachments, share links, discussions, the Recycle Bin and download links for your own models. Then you choose from these boxes:

• Upload and organize: upload models and new versions, rename and move models, mark favorites, make, rename and remove folders, and add to a model's discussion. Ticked to start.
• Recycle Bin: move models to it and restore them. It can never delete anything for good. Ticked to start.
• Measure and picture (Pro): read a model's size, volume, weight and parts, draw pictures of it, and model new parts with build_part, edit_part and undo_part_step. Nothing you already have is changed; a part your AI models is saved only when Upload and organize is ticked too. Ticked to start.
• Share (Pro): turn a model's link on or off, email a link to a model or folder, and make groups and invite or remove members. Unticked to start. This box shows only on Pro accounts.

• Work in your open viewer: your AI uses the viewer's own tools in the tab you have open, as you would with the mouse. Each action goes through the same checks, is logged, and can be undone. Unticked to start.

Click Allow or Cancel. The assistant cannot see your password, email or billing. Your plan's limits still apply. A connection keeps the permissions you gave it. To change them, disconnect and connect again.

One Connection

Your plan sets how many AI connections your account can have at once: one on Free, Advanced, Pro and Pro Plus, and two on Pro Max. When you are at your limit, allowing a new one signs out the one used longest ago, and the Allow page names it before you click. That app is not deleted; it has to be connected again.

This keeps one account from being shared around. If a second person needs an AI connection, they need their own account.

Bring Your Own AI

STEPFILE.com does not include an AI of its own. You connect the assistant you already use, and your subscription to it stays with that company.

What Counts Against Your Plan

Only modeling time counts: the time our modeling engine spends measuring, picturing or building a model for your AI, counted by the second with a one second minimum. Pro includes 60 minutes a month, Pro Plus 600 and Pro Max 1,500. Everything else your AI does (finding, opening, organizing, uploading and sharing models) is never counted against your plan.

Connected Apps shows the modeling time used this cycle and when it resets, plus a monthly history of what your AI did. If an assistant gets stuck in a loop and makes thousands of requests in an hour, it is asked to wait a few minutes before it can continue.

Labels and Disconnecting

A version an AI uploads shows an "Added by AI" tag to you, and one the AI builds with the modeling engine shows "Made with AI". Only you see these tags. What the assistant changed is listed under Connected Apps, where you can also disconnect it.
