STEPFILE.comFree, alpha release

Embedding a Model on Your Website

Embedding is on Pro, Pro Plus and Pro Max. Visitors can turn, zoom and pan the model, but they never get your file. Open a saved model and either click Share, then the Embed tab, or choose File, Share, Embed on a website.... Both show the same controls.

Publishing

Click Publish this model. Your browser makes a light copy of the model with a picture, and you get code to paste into your page. Copy code copies it. To embed another model, use Publish another.

The embed link also answers oEmbed requests, for tools that read them.

Settings

  • Websites that may show it, one per line: write www.example.com or *.example.com. Only https sites count. If you leave it empty, it shows only on this site.
  • Background: Dark, Light or Transparent.
  • Slowly turn until touched
  • Load on click instead of when scrolled into view
  • Keep this embed up to date: the embed follows your saved model.

A preview shows the result as you change settings.

Code Options

Under the preview, the Code options change the code in the box as you choose. Nothing is saved or republished: the options live in the code you paste.

  1. Size: pick 640 x 480, 800 x 600 or 100% x 500, or choose Custom and type a Width and Height. Type pixels (like 700) or a percent (like 50%). Pixels run from 120 to 4000 and percents from 10 to 100, and a number outside that is brought to the nearest allowed one.
  2. Responsive: fill the width, keep the shape: ticked (the default), the frame is as wide as the space on your page and keeps the shape of the width and height you chose, so 800 x 600 stays 4 to 3 at any width. Untick it for a fixed size. A size in percent has no shape of its own, so a responsive frame with a percent size is 4 to 3.
  3. Starting view: As published opens the model the way it looked when you published it. Isometric, Front, Top and Right open it from that side. Current view opens it the way the model is turned in the viewer right now. Turn the model, then press Take current view to take it again.
  4. Visitors can use Measure: untick it and the Measure button does not appear for visitors of that code.
  5. Press Copy code and paste it into your page.

The starting view and the Measure choice ride on the address inside the code, so you can use different codes for the same embed, one for each page. Visitors can still turn the model. Fit and Reset view go back to the starting view. A code made before these options existed works exactly as it did.

Managing It

A status chip reads On, Off, Not published or Out of date. Buttons let you turn it off or on, republish and delete. Counters show views, plays, measured and where it is shown.

What Visitors Get

Visitors get buttons to fit the view, reset it, zoom in and out, and go full screen. A measure button appears when you allow it, with point to point, edge length, diameter and between faces, plus a units list. On Pro, a small STEPFILE.com link sits in the corner of the embedded model. On Pro Plus and Pro Max, embeds show no STEPFILE.com link at all. This follows your plan when the page loads, so a plan change shows the next time a visitor opens the page. The Embed controls say which applies to your plan.

If your plan drops below Pro, the embed pauses. Visitors see a note that embedding on other websites is a Pro feature.

Step by Step

The whole walk through the Embed tab is on The Embed Tab.
