Measure Snap
Snap on the Measure tab chooses which exact points a Point pick jumps to. It is the measuring Snap. Sketching has its own, see Snap Options.
Step by Step
- Click the Measure tab, then Snap. A small window called Snap to opens under the button.
- Tick the kinds of point you want the pick to jump to:
- Corners and end points
- Midpoints of edges and arcs
- Centers of circles and arcs
- Quadrant points of circles (top, bottom, left, right)
- Edges (the nearest point on one)
- The model origin
- All ticks every box. None clears every box.
- Close the window with the X, press Esc, or click anywhere else.
- Click two spots with the Point tool. When a pick snaps, the readout says "Snapped to" and what it caught.
How It Picks
- A pick jumps to the nearest corner, midpoint, center, quadrant point or origin that is within about 5 percent of the model's size.
- If none of those is near, and Edges is ticked, it jumps to the nearest spot on a hard edge.
- If nothing is near, or every box is cleared, the pick lands where the cursor touches the surface.
Good to Know
- Your choices are remembered in this browser, so they are there next time.
- Snap works with the Point tool. The other measuring tools pick whole edges or faces and do not need it.
- You can drag the window by its title strip.
Tips and Common Problems
- The pick keeps landing on something I did not want. Open Snap and clear that kind.
- I need a spot in the middle of a face. Clear every box (None) and click.
- No snap happens. Zoom in. The pick has to be close to the point before it jumps.
