Private Notes
Private notes are a block of text saved with your model that only you can read. Use them for reminders such as the job number, a customer request or what to check next. They are not pinned to a spot and they are not shared.
You can write them in two places: the Notes panel, and the Save window.
Step by Step: Write Notes in the Notes Panel
- Sign in and open a model.
- Open Notes on the right rail. The panel opens on the Notes tab.
- Click in the box and type. The hint above it reads "Notes autosave into this project a moment after you stop typing."
- Stop typing. About a second later the notes save, and the line reads "Saved."
- Click Notes on the rail again to close the panel.
If the model has never been saved, the hint reads "Save this model to your account first, then your notes will autosave." Save it with File, Save, then type.
Step by Step: Write Notes in the Save Window
- Click File, then Save (or Save as).
- Find the Private notes box under the Folder choice. The placeholder reads "Notes only you can see, saved with this project".
- Type your notes.
- Click Save. The notes are stored with the model.
The Notes panel opens, and keeps its text with the saved model, for every signed-in account. The Private notes box in the Save window shows a PAID tag and is still Advanced and up only; on a Free plan it is hidden.
Options
| Where | What you can do | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Notes panel, Notes tab | Type and autosave a text pad for this model | Every signed-in account |
| Save window, Private notes | Write or edit the same notes while saving | Advanced and higher |
Good to Know
- Open a saved model and its notes come back into both places.
- The two boxes stay in step: they hold the same notes, so what you type in one shows in the other.
- While a large model is still opening you may see its picture first. The Notes box then takes no typing and says "The file is still opening." Wait for the model to finish, then type: notes typed during that moment could not be saved with the right project.
- A Save as copy starts with the notes of the model you have open. Clear the Private notes box in the Save window if the copy should start blank.
- The Bring along from the original row has a different item, Notes pinned on the model. That one is about note pins, not this text. See Note (Pin a Note on the Model).
Tips
- Use the Notes panel for quick jotting while you work. The Save window box is there when you save a copy and want to read or clear its notes.
- To talk with other people about the model, use Discussion. Private notes are for you alone.
If Something Goes Wrong
- "Sign in to use the notepad." The Notes panel needs an account.
- My notes did not save. The model has to be saved to your account first. Use File, Save.
- There is no Private notes box in the Save window. That box is part of the Advanced plan and higher. Use the Notes panel instead. See Plans and Billing.
- I only see Discussion. The private pad is not offered on that page. The Discussion is shared with everyone on the model.
