Measure Mass
Mass gives the weight of the model, worked out from its volume and its material. The button is named Mass, in the Advanced drawer of the Measure tab. It does not change the model.
Step by Step
- Open a 3D model, click the Measure tab, click Advanced, then Mass. The readout says "Tap the object to weigh it in the chosen material."
- Click anywhere on the model. The whole model lights up orange and the weight is written at its center, in pounds, like 12.3 lb.
- The readout says Weight, then the material and its density in pounds per cubic inch. When parts have different materials it says "mixed materials" and "part by part".
- The result is kept as a numbered pill. See Kept Measurements.
Choosing the Material
- Right-click a body in the Model Tree and pick its material. That pick wins.
- If you did not pick one, a material named inside the file is used when the viewer knows it.
- Otherwise the default material from File, Settings is used.
- See Materials and Weight for the full list and how mixed parts add up.
When the Button Is Not Available
- On a flat DXF drawing it is greyed out. Hover over it and it says "Weight needs a 3D model."
- While you are sketching it is greyed out (hover text: "Weight is for the solid; exit sketching").
Tips and Common Problems
- The weight is for steel but my part is aluminum. Set the material on the body, as above.
- Only the parts showing are weighed. A hidden part is left out of the total.
- Weight is always in pounds here, whatever length unit you chose. For the volume in your unit, use Measure Volume.
