Billing: Cards

The Billing tab shows the card your plan is charged to, an optional backup card, and every card you have saved. Use it to change your card, add a safety net, or remove an old card. Card numbers go straight to Stripe, our payment processor, and never touch our servers. Only the brand, last four digits and expiry are shown.

These rows show when you have a subscription on a paid plan.

Step by Step: Change Your Card

  1. Open your account page and click the Billing tab.
  2. Find the Card row. It reads like Visa ending 4242, expires 05/2028.
  3. Click Update card. A payment form opens below.
  4. Enter the new card and finish the form. Click Cancel under the form to close it without changing anything.
  5. The page returns to Billing with Your new card is saved and will be used from now on.

Step by Step: Add a Backup Card

  1. On the Billing tab, find the Backup card row. It starts as None yet. A backup card is charged only if your main card is declined.
  2. Click Add backup card and finish the payment form.
  3. The page returns with Your backup card is saved. It is charged only if your main card is declined.

If the card you enter is already your main card, it says That card is already your main card, so it was not added as a backup.

Step by Step: Manage Saved Cards

  1. Look at the Saved cards row. Each card shows its brand, last four digits and expiry, and marks your (main card) and (backup card).
  2. On a card that is not the main card, click one of:
    • Make primary: the card your plan is charged to.
    • Use as backup: the card to try if the main card is declined. This button is missing on a card that is already the backup.
    • Remove: asks Remove this card? Click OK to delete it.

How the Backup Card Works

If a renewal is declined and you have a backup card that is a different card, the site tries the open bill once on the backup card. If that works, your plan carries on and the backup becomes your main card. If it is declined too, your account moves to the Free limits until a working card is on file.

If a Payment Failed

When a payment fails, the Status row reads Payment failed. Your account is on the Free limits until the card is fixed. Click Update card (or Make primary on another saved card). The unpaid bill is paid with it right away and your plan comes back. If it cannot be charged, the message says The unpaid bill could not be charged to it yet; Stripe said no. Try another card.

Tips

  • Keep a backup card from a different bank. A lost or expired main card then does not stop your plan.
  • Each card's expiry date shows, so you can swap it before it runs out.

If Something Goes Wrong

  • "That is your main card. Pick a different card as the backup." A card cannot be its own backup.
  • "That is your main card, so it cannot be removed. Make another card the main card first." Use Make primary on a different card, then remove this one.
  • "There is no card on file yet." You have not paid on this account yet. See Billing: Subscribe to a Plan.
  • "That card is not on your account." The card does not belong to this account.
  • The payment form will not load. Reload the page and try again.
