File, Create New Version

Create new version (keep the old one) saves your modeling as a new numbered version of the model and keeps the earlier file as an older version you can still open.

When to Use It

  • You reached a stage you may want to come back to
  • You are about to try something risky on a part
  • You want a clean record of the part before and after a set of edits

Step by Step

  1. Open a model that is saved to your account and make an edit with a modeling tool. This item shows in the File menu only while modeling is open.
  2. Click File, then Create new version (keep the old one). You can also open the Save group on the modeling toolbar and press Create new version.
  3. A message says "Saving version" and the number. The number is picked for you: when the current version is a plain number, the next number is used.
  4. When it is done, the message reads Saved as version and the number, and the model reloads from the new version.

Edit It Later

Your edits already save themselves into the current version about every 2.5 seconds, so you never lose work by skipping this. A new version is only for when you want a stage kept apart. Open any older one from File, Versions. See File, Versions. To add a version from a file on your computer instead, see File, Upload a New Version.

Tips and What to Expect

  • The button is greyed until you have changed something.
  • Measurements, notes and hidden parts do not carry into the new version. They stay with the older versions. The feature tree does carry over.
  • Embeds that keep themselves up to date follow the new version.
  • How many versions are kept depends on your plan. When the history is full, the oldest kept version is dropped.

Common Problems

  • "This model is not saved to your account, so there is no model to version. Download STEP instead." Save the model first with File, Save. See File, Save. Or use File, Download Edited STEP.
  • "Switch back to the current version first." An older version is on screen. Pick the one marked (current) in File, Versions.
  • I cannot press it. Nothing has changed since the last save. Make an edit first.
