New Part in Assembly
Makes a brand new part while you're inside an assembly, placed on a plane or a flat face you choose. The modeling tools open with a sketch on that plane, so you can draw a part that fits the ones around it. This needs the Pro plan and the modeling tools.
When to Use It
- Draw a bracket straight onto the face of an existing part
- Build a plate on one of the assembly's origin planes
- Start a part without leaving the assembly
Step by Step
- Open an assembly. Click the Assembly tab, then New Part. Or right-click the assembly row in the Model tree and choose New Part...
- A New Part window asks Name of the new part. It suggests Part1, then Part2 and so on. Type a name (up to 160 characters) and click Next.
- A second window, New Part: <name>, says "Pick a plane or flat face to place it on." Click a flat face of a component in the view, or click Front Plane, Top Plane or Right Plane to use a plane of the assembly origin.
- A message says "Making <name>..." and the new part is saved to your account as a model of its own.
- The modeling tools open with a sketch on that plane, and the corner bar reads "Editing <name> in <assembly>". Draw your part.
- Click Exit Edit Part in the corner bar to save it and go back to the assembly.
Options
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| Front Plane, Top Plane, Right Plane | The part is placed on that plane of the assembly origin and is fixed there. |
| A flat face of a component | The part is placed on that face and joined to it with a Coincident mate. |
| Next / Cancel | Go on to the plane step, or stop with nothing made. |
Tips
- Leaving with nothing drawn takes the empty part away again. The message reads "<name> was not kept: nothing was drawn."
- The new part is an ordinary saved model. You can find it in your files and insert it into other assemblies.
- The x in the corner bar leaves without saving, and for a new part that also takes the new part away. See Edit Part.
- You can't use another part as a reference while you draw. Pick a face of the new part itself.
If Something Goes Wrong
- "Give the new part a name." The name box is empty.
- "That is not a flat face. Pick a flat face or a plane." Curved faces can't hold a new part.
- "That cannot hold a new part. Pick a plane or a flat face."
- "Sign in to make a new part." The new part is saved to your account, so you need to be signed in.
- "Could not make the new part." Try again in a moment.
- "The part could not be saved, so it stays open. Your changes are still here." Try Exit Edit Part again.
- "The modeling tools are busy. Try again in a moment."
- "Collapse the exploded view before editing a part."
- "Editing a part needs the modeling tools, which your plan does not include."
- "A part is already open for editing. Exit Edit Part first."
- "This assembly is shared with you to look at..." A shared assembly can't be changed.
- "Edit Part works on assemblies built from saved parts..." An assembly opened from a STEP file can't take a new part.
