Model Tree: Material
Material... gives one body its own material, so the weight you read in Mass is right even when a part is made of more than one thing. It is free on every plan.
Step by Step
- Open the Model panel and open Solid Bodies.
- Right-click the body and choose Material.... A box titled "Material of (body name)" opens.
- Open the list and pick a material. The list is grouped into Metal, Wood and Plastic (3D print).
- Click Set. Click Cancel, the X or press Esc to close without a change.
- A message tells you the new weight, such as "Bolt: Stainless 304. The weight now reads 4.20 lb."
The First Choice in the List
The first line of the list does not set a material of its own. It puts the body back on the default.
- It reads Default (Carbon steel) when the file gave no material.
- It reads From the file: and the file's name for the material when the file carries one.
Options
- Material: the list of 24 materials. See Materials and Weight for each one and its density.
- Set: keeps your pick and rebuilds the weight.
- Cancel: closes the box.
Where the Material Shows
A note beside the body in Solid Bodies shows the material you picked. The same pick is also in the right-click menu of a part inside an opened STEP assembly.
Tips
- Each body keeps its own material. Changing one does not change the others.
- Your pick is saved with the model.
- Renaming a body keeps its material.
- The weight updates at once. Click Mass on the Measure tab to see it. See Measure Mass.
If Something Goes Wrong
- Material... is grayed. An older version is on screen. Go back to the current one.
- The weight still looks wrong. A hidden body is not weighed. Show it first.
- A body is named in the weight result as "not counted". It has no density. Give it a material here.
